Before heading to the library, I looked up Andrew’s address and decided to stop by his house first. I hadn’t heard they had re-opened the rec center yet. Andrew lived on the road directly behind my shop. From his front step he would have a view of the fence that concealed the back alley of my shop, the diner, gift shop, bookstore, and bakery.

We took the long way around and drove by the rec center first. The parking lot was empty and police tape still stretched around the entrances. Andrew’s road was short with only enough room for four houses with moderate spacing between them. Flower arrangements and bouquets covered the lawn next to his. Declan slowed as he neared Andrew’s house but continued down the road so he could turn around. He stopped just past the flowered lawn. “Did you know Maggie lived right next to your shop?”

I could feel my mouth hanging open as I strained to look at the yard behind me. “I had no idea. I’ve never been over here. The farthest I’ve gone is out my back door, into the alley, but it’s fenced off so I can’t see over it.” I gestured to the wooden fence on the other side of the road.

Andrew met us on his front porch when we were half-way up his driveway. “I knew you would find your way here eventually.” He sat down on an old, wooden chair. I couldn’t help but notice the marks on the wood porch where years on the chair legs scrapping against it had dulled the appearance. If I had to guess, I would say Andrew was in his mid-forties, nowhere near retirement age as I assumed he would be. He looked fit, no doubt due to the time spent at the rec center. “I didn’t expect you to show up with a bodyguard.”

“Oh, no, he’s not…” I ended my sentence when I saw the look of amusement on his face and followed to where his eyes were looking. “That’s Diesel. And the human is my friend, Declan. Is it okay if we ask you a few questions?”

He gestured to the chairs on the opposite side of the door for us to sit. “I actually expected you much sooner, but then I remembered you had the opening for your little shop.”

My body instantly went rigid and Declan rested his hand on my knee. He knew I took issue with people belittling my line of work. “Yes, my little business that has me booked out months in advance has kept me busy these past few days.” Declan’s fingers tightened around my leg and I changed the subject. “I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that I’m a suspect in Maggie’s murder. I’d like to clear my name as soon as possible so I’m looking for any information that can help me do that.”

Andrew nodded his head. “I would do the same if I were in your position, of course, I wouldn’t ever be in your position…”

“Never? Because I heard you were having trouble with both Carly and Maggie.
